Melanotan II
Melanotan II Acetate
Overview
Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic peptide analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It activates melanocortin receptors, producing effects on skin pigmentation (tanning), sexual function, appetite, and fat metabolism. It was originally developed at the University of Arizona as a potential tanning agent.
Mechanism of Action
Melanotan II is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist, binding to MC1R (skin pigmentation), MC3R and MC4R (sexual function, energy homeostasis), and MC5R (exocrine gland function). MC1R activation stimulates melanogenesis, darkening the skin. MC4R activation produces appetite suppression and enhances sexual arousal via central nervous system pathways.
