Cerebrolysin
Cerebrolysin (Porcine Brain-Derived Peptide Preparation)
Overview
Cerebrolysin is a multi-modal neuropeptide preparation derived from purified porcine brain proteins. It contains a mixture of low-molecular-weight neuropeptides and free amino acids that mimic the action of endogenous neurotrophic factors. It is approved in many countries (not the US) for stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer's disease.
Mechanism of Action
Cerebrolysin contains peptides that mimic the activity of BDNF, GDNF, NGF, and CNTF. It promotes neuroplasticity, reduces neuronal apoptosis, modulates GSK-3β (relevant to Alzheimer's tau pathology), enhances synaptic function, and has antioxidant properties. Its multi-target approach differentiates it from single-mechanism nootropics. It also improves cerebral energy metabolism.
